EAT:
He's definitely learned that he can refuse food. He's become more picky this month. Will not *touch* pasta. Doesn't like sweet potatoes or sweet potato fries. Meats are hit or miss, especially chicken and deli meat which used to be favorites. He absolutely loves bananas and ritz crackers. Caleb's been slipping him more sweets this month, pulling the line of "our kid's in the 10% for weight, he needs some fat". Haha. Caleb gives him cookies, Mommy gives him spinach nuggets--no wonder he's a Daddy's boy. Seriously, I did give him spinach nuggets and he loves them :). Allergy testing all came back negative, he's back on whole cow's milk and is doing great, gets it 3x/day in his sippy. The boy LOVES water. It's crazy how much water that boy can drink--and believe me, it shows in his diaper :). We've transitioned his schedule later, so now he can wait and eat dinner with us at 6:45-7. It's nice to sit and eat dinner the 3 of us!
SLEEP:
One year molars came in on his left side, those were a doozie on the sleep. Otherwise, he's doing great at night. Goes to bed 7:30ish and wakes up between 7 and 7:30 in the mornings...a little later! Dropped the morning nap this month, so we're down to 1 nap/day most of the time around 12:30-2:30.
Playing/Activities:
He's taken off with his walking and now highly prefers walking over crawling. I would judge he walks about 80% of the time. He used to crawl to something where he could pull to stand to walk, and just in the past week has been able to stand up from sitting position. He's still a little wobbly, but can easily walk from the laundry room to our room without falling down. He's also gotten really good at falling, will typically just fall on his little bottom and get right back up! He's very very busy and very curious. Favorite toys continue to be remotes and phones. He loves his fridge farm and will press the music button and do his version of "dancing" which is up and down squatting. He also is becoming more interested in books and loves his veggie tales book that plays music. He does love music and definitely prefers his kids CDs to the radio. However, one of my favorite memories from this month was listening to "Sweet Home Alabama" on the radio and looking
back and seeing his little hands clapping above his head in the rearview mirror. Haha. His all time favorite activity though is going outside. He LOVES to be outside. When he wakes up and we come downstairs, he points to the door and waves bye bye. I would say most of the time we're playing inside, he's wanting to go outside. As soon as I say "want to go X" he just smiles and starts waving because he knows we'll go outside. He's really starting to be aware of routines and he knows when Caleb is about to go to work in the mornings and will put his little head on the floor and cry. I've also started telling him "no" in a firm voice if he does something potentially dangerous and he will look at me and just melt down--I mean the pouty lip, to the "I just got in trouble face", to full out cry on the floor with head in the carpet. He's got a sensitive side to him :).He's extremely social and loves to be around people. We go outside and he points to Stephen
and Diana's house--if I turn the other way he arches and yells at me to go to their house. He does the same with wanting to go see our neighbor Mary, as she's typically out on her porch smoking :). We're working through some sensory play, he's getting a little weird about different textures (ie: rice, play doh) so we'll see what happens in that area. The OTs at work say it's "typical", but he gags just touching play doh. Hmm. I'm hoping it's just a stage but he HATES getting diaper and clothes changes. I mean, you would think we're pinching him the whole time. Sometimes you can get lucky with a toy to distract him, but most of the time it's just you against him.
Talking/Language:
As the SLP, this is the area you would think he would be off the chart in, but I have to take my own advice I give to patients that "there's such a large range of average at this age and he'll do it when he's ready". Believe me, the boy LOVES to talk and hear his voice! He's just speaking in Carter language which is a lot of d's and t's. Caleb says he would do great at an African tribal language because we can make clicking sounds that he will imitate perfectly. However, he's not into imitating the english language sounds. Caleb and I were debating on this yesterday. I would say he has the words (and means) dada, all done (a. duh), and mama. He consistently will sign "eat", "all done", "yes", and "bye bye". He will consistently point and gesture to anything he wants and accompany it with grunting/screaming/or yelling in his Carter language (sounds kinda Mandarin?) until he gets what he wants.
Health:
Thankfully asthma is well under control. We upped his advair inhaler to almsot triple the dose and that (or being out of MDO for 3 weeks?) seems to have done the trick. We have another pulmonologist appt this week, so we shall see!
Happy 13 months Carter Boy!
