Carter's First Christmas!

Things have been busy, but oh so fun around here the past few weeks. We got Christmas cards/baby announcements out and mailed, took our first family road trip to Austin, and had lots of family come see us in Dallas to celebrate Carter's first Christmas! Here's what's been going on in pics...

Lots of snuggling with MiMi. We love having her so close! This night she babysat Carter while we went to Caleb's work Christmas party and got to be "grown ups" for a while :). We told her we would be out late....which was 9:40 :). Are we old yet?!

Stopped by Waco on the way to Austin to have some time with Aunt Ali!

We can't be in Austin without going to see Grandpa and GrandmaJo!

Carter receiving his first (of many!) Christmas gifts. Yea! Bath toys!

Nana got lots of snuggle time in...and Mommy got some naps :). Thank you Nana!

Aunt Beth and cousin Sofia with Carter. Sofia was very curious of the little guy---so sweet!

Uncle Stephen came over to open gifts with Burlie and Great Nana when we got back from Austin!

Snuggling with Burlie.

And this has nothing to do with Christmas, but wanted to document daily life around the house. Carter has blow outs on occassion but this was worth documenting. The changing table...

...and the carpet

...and Mommy's pants.

A Christmas tradition for us is going to look at Christmas lights, so Carter joined us this year for the first of many Christmas light experiences. First, we stopped at Starbucks for some hot chocolate!

Daddy was mesmerized by this tree.

Carter in his Christmas  pjs, slept pretty much through the whole thing!

On Christmas Eve Aunt Emily, Uncle Jeff, and the boys came over for some Carter time and to exchange gifts.

The boys with their gifts!

All dressed and ready for the Christmas Eve service at church! This is a longtime Christmas tradition for both of us. Last year we were in Colorado at a small little chapel with snow everywhere, this year holding my newborn  baby boy in our home church. I teared up a little bit during "Silent Night"....so blessed.

Christmas morning....Santa came! Carter got his 3 gifts--diapers, a toy, and a monitor! We also all got goodies in our stockings.

Christmas afternoon was full of snuggling and family time. Here's Mamie's first times with Carter.

He was definitely the star of the weekend, everyone just sat around and stared at him :).

Loving family time!

Great Grandaddy with Carter.

The boys--minus Stephen who was next door preparing the Christmas feast! I didn't get pictures, but it was a good spread  and our first time to have fried turkey--delish! Thanks Uncle Stephen and Aunt Diana for hosting a fabulous Christmas dinner!

Grandpa giving Carter a bottle.

...lots of snuggling. This is at Uncle Stephen's house.

Mommy enjoyed visiting and catching up with family while others played with Carter.

Uncle Stephen trying to calm Carter singing "Texas Fight"--it worked :)

Great Grandaddy feeding Carter a bottle.

Family left on Monday and we had some relaxing family time--do you see resemblance in this picture? I do!

Carter has been enjoying the bouncy in the bathroom while Mommy gets ready for the day!

We are definitely enjoying lots of snuggling, but he's already starting to hold his head up and when we put him on our chest he won't really snuggle up any more....he'll lift his head and look at you :). He has advanced from newborn to size 1 diapers and last night slept 6 hours in a row! I have a feeling that's not a constant, but we'll take it when we can! He's also outgrown 2 of his newborn outfits already, so we know he's growing well! We're still enjoying lots of visitors and love our nightly family time. Next week will probably become more our "routine" as Caleb will be working more full-time hours (he's been able to be more lax during the holidays going in later and coming home earlier) and our weekly "stuff" starts back up--Bible study, community group, track workouts (for Daddy!), and we're excited to add Monday playgroup to that list! We are still figuring out how to balance plenty of Carter/family time with our activities and will make adjustments as needed, but ready to get more "routine". I'm still loving motherhood and my heart is full everytime I look at Carter. We still can't get over how much we love him :).

The Labor Story :)

It's been 2 1/2 weeks and I feel like I'm already forgetting details, so here it is....sorry if it's too long, I wanted to get this written down for my chronicle more than anything.

I went to work on Thursday, felt totally normal that morning. Right before lunch I started having stomach tighening--probably Braxton Hicks type contractions. Ended up skipping the inservice that day so I could "feel it out" and called Caleb to let him know that I thought everything was okay, but have his phone handy just in case. Ate lunch, asked a fellow mother "how do you know what labor feels like" and her response was..."you'll know". Hmm...well, since I didn't know what labor felt like, but I wasn't in any pain, I finished the day of work, saw my patients, and finished documentation. I did end up leaving my list of patients in priority order for the next day "just in case". However, Friday was supposed to be my last day and I was very excited about my last "fun Friday lunch" so I told everyone I'm sure I would see them the next day and went on my merry way home. At home felt TOTALLY normal. Mom stopped by to bring a "My 1st Christmas" ornament for Carter and I didn't even tell her about my "contractions" earlier in the day because I no longer thought anything of it. Caleb got home, we chilled as normal, and I decided that I was going to sterlize bottles/my breast pump as at Bible study the day before the girls told me I should do that before he came. Finished the sterilizing and told Caleb I was bored--our options were to go to Target or watch a movie. We decided to watch the new "Alice in Wonderland"  (with Johnny Depp) on netflix--this was about 8 pm.

Flash forward to 8:30 p.m.--laying on the couch with my pillow and blanket (very typical for movie night) and all of a sudden VERY painful cramping in my back and stomach. I get up and walk to the bathroom to "walk it out". Don't say anything but think "weird". These pains CONTINUE to happen--then go away. Hmm...could THESE be contractions? I ask Caleb for his watch who is still blissfully unaware of what's going on and continues to watch the movie. I start timing these pains and realize they're about every 4-7 minutes. I get a piece of paper and start writing down but still don't think too much of it. They told us at the childbirth class "5-1-1"--remember that; contractions every 5 minutes, lasting a minute, for an hour. So, when it's been about 45 minutes I start realizing this might be it! I walk up the stairs to get some travel size conditioner to put in my hospital bag and Caleb sees me--"what are you doing?". I tell him and he asks if he should pack a hospital bag (still 1/2way watching the movie) and I tell him it wouldn't be a bad idea. Just in case--I'm still not convinced. I've had so many friends who go to the hospital and get sent home that I really didn't know/think  I was in labor at this point. I took a shower, did my hair/makeup as the contractions kept coming. They were painful--I had to stop talking/walking to get through them--but still wasn't convinced. At about 10:15 we decide maybe this is the real thing? I knew if it was I was going to be made NPO once I got to the hospital, so we decided to go to Chick-fil-A to grab a bite to eat and see how I felt...bummer, CFA closed at 10 :(. Next best thing=Sonic grilled cheese and cherry limeade. Caleb "sympathy ate" with me :). At this point our car is packed and I end up calling the doctor on call. I tell her I'm having contractions every 4-7 minutes but they don't seem to be intensifying, they seem the same. She says if I want to go to the hospital I can, but her recommendation would be to try to get some rest--if it's labor they'll get worse, if it's not, they'll get better and I'll be able to sleep.

So, we go home, get in bed, I watch some BAD late night TV (I think I love lucy?) and have to get up every 5 minutes to stand up through the contractions and they are getting more painful. I remember thinking "this has to be labor. there is no way anyone could sleep through these". So, at 1155 I wake Caleb up and say it's time, we're going to the hospital. I call the doctor back, and we head to the hospital!

We check in at 12:20 (here's hoping that by waiting we're getting charged for 1 day instead of 2!), they put the monitors on me, and by golly I am having contractions! Great, I'm not crazy! The nurse (Allison, she was great!) says they'll monitor me for 2 hours or so and then decide whether or not to admit me. So, me and my not so pretty hospital gowned self walk the halls with Caleb, stopping every ~5 minutes to let the contraction pass. We see the newborn babies in the nursery and think it's crazy that Carter might be in there this time the next night! There's not a whole lot to explore, but Caleb kept the conversation going and time went by fast. At about 2:30 they check me and I've progressed (won't go into too much detail on this here public blog!) so this IS it! I'm really in labor! She asks my pain level on a scale of 1-10 and I say 7. Now, working in a hospital I know that pain levels are purely subjective and to me it was a 7...but then she says, "well if a 5 is crying pain what are you?" and then I have to go down to 3-4, but believe me, on a scale of 10 I was NOT at 3-4! She asks if I want the epidural now or want to wait--she says there's really no good that would come out of waiting, so I say now is great! The anesthesiologist enters from his on call sleeping room and thankfully is alert enough to do a wonderful job and I'm a new person. It was amazing to watch those contractions on the monitor and not feel a thing!

We call the parents, text the siblings, and try to get some rest. I'm so excited that I can't sleep--I end up staying up and spending some sweet time with the Lord, put my worship music on my phone, and realize how blessed I am and what an amazing thing is about to happen. I sleep for about 40 minutes.  About 5:30 I end up texting my friends/family and text back/forth until about 7 when I realize I can watch the Today show and not feel bad about waking Caleb up as it's officially morning :). My Mom and Nana show up around 7:30, my Dad and Jolie around 8:30, and Dad hangs out with me a while while Caleb gets breakfast. I then start feeling nauseous and visitors leave the room and I get some zofran through the IV and some ice chips. Around 11 I am 9.5 centimeters dilated and they say I'll probably start pushing around 11:30. Great! Baby by noon I think....wrong. I end up pushing for 3 hours, as Carter was born at 2:31. Caleb was a rockstar hubby through the thing, knew what to say to praise my efforts, and always had the ice chips waiting. My doctor was actually sick that day, but the on call doctor was absolutely fabulous and did a great job. He and Caleb had a lot in common so they discussed Texas football and the NYC marathon (his wife just ran it when Caleb did) as I attempted the pushing :).

Carter was born at 2:31 pm and when he was born I felt was pure relief. I did develop a fever after they broke my water and Carter's heartrate got up to the 180s at times, so I was a) worried about him and b) exhausted from pushing/not having anything to eat in 16 hours/not sleeping in 48 hours. They put him on my chest and he was beautiful and SO alert. I couldn't get over how alert he was! I did notice he had a shortened frenulum (the SLP in me--he ended up getting it clipped at his 3 day appt with the pedi) right off the bat, but he was perfect. They took him to assess him, let our family come in to see him, then took him to the newborn nursery pretty quick as he had developed a fever from me having a fever--ended up being just fine, but they were cautious. I got my gatorade and felt like a new person--I was SO thirsty and those ice chips were doing absolutely nothing to quench my thirst! My epidural was removed but did not wear off until about 3 am the next morning, so my nurses in post partum loved my beckoning calls to turn me I'm sure :). I was wheeled from labor and delivery to post partum and they took me by the nursery and I got to see Carter again--he was wailing from his bath, but it was the sweetest wail I had heard. Got to post partum, got oriented, and they brought me my baby--and all was right. Visitors left and we had some sweet time as a family of 3. December 3rd, 2010--a day that Carter will one day roll his eyes when I say "I remember x years ago today" and tell him the above :).

All in all, labor wasn't that bad, especially now as I reflect back as this sweet little miracle is peacefully sleeping on my chest as I right this....he is SO worth it. Love you Carter boy!

Week 2!

Carter had his 2 week check up at the pediatrician yesterday. He's now 8 lbs, 9 ounces (the goal is to be at birthweight by 2 weeks so check!), 21 1/4 inches. Doctor said he's doing great!

He has a new thing where he acts like he's starving from about 5 pm to 9 pm--he'll literally eat 3 times (for 30 mins each time!) in that 4 hour window, but then SLEEP anywhere from 4-6 hours! Last night I was exhausted and went to bed about 8 pm, Caleb gave him a bottle at 9:30 and he didn't wake up until 3. That's 7 hours of straight sleep for Mommy and it was glorious! I'm a new person today :).

Caleb went back to work this week and although we miss him, we are sure enjoying the stay at home lifestyle. Here's a few pics of what our week looked like...

Lovin' the bouncy seat. This one actually bounces (vs vibrates) and Carter loves it. He cries when it quits bouncing, I push the button, and voila--he's back to his happy self!

Playtime on the mat. Here is Daddy showing him how to look in the mirror.
He loves playtime with Daddy! Here he is already working out with Dad--Caleb's teaching him how to do push ups!
All dressed and ready for our first time at church! Funny story here...we've learned that it takes us a lot longer to get ready and out the door, so church starts at 9:45. Caleb and I were both dressed and ready by about 8 am. So, we decide we have almost 2 hours--we will get Carter dressed and we'll all head to the traditional Einstein's bagels before church. We get him in this cute tie outfit (thanks Jocelyn!) and we are ready to go....and he poops. So, we change his diaper and in the midst of changing the diaper and pees/poops everywhere. Okay, cute outfit #2 is on, he's in the carseat and we're ready--at 8:45. Still plenty of time! We have a marvelous breakfast at Einstein's, Carter sleeps the entire time, and we get to the church parking lot at about 9:20 so I can feed him before going in. I pick him up out of the carseat and his entire outfit is soaking from the bottom half down. Geez kiddo. So, I'm THAT lady in the women's restroom at church with a screaming 9 day old baby (which thankfully everyone thought was adorable and his newborn cry was "so sweet") attempting to change him/clean him/clean his outfit by myself for the first time. We survived. He ate and we made it into church...granted, we were about 5 minutes late, but we made it. He did wonderful, slept the entire time. Whew.
He loves his nighttime bottles with Daddy (and Mommy loves to go to sleep early while they have this bonding time)!
I love this picture of him as I see this expression/outfit combo quite often. This is his little sleeper he sleeps in every night (it velcroes around to keep him in a tight swaddle) and many times I think he's sleeping, I walk by, and this is what I see--those precious little eyes just peeking out over at me, chill as can be. Love him.

All ready for bed! You can really see the outfit here...it's like a baby straight jacket, but he loves it! We only put him in it to sleep at nighttime. Tight swaddle=happy Carter at night!

Our little chunker. We also spend many many moments each day on this here changing table. We're both becoming more aware of his projectile pee/poop habits, and only once this week did he actually poop all over this table, me (shirt and pants), and the carpet. After that incident, I change him from the side of the table and I'm much quicker with a new diaper handy just in case :).

This is new today....his pacifier! I sure hope it will become a staple (who knows...in 2 years I might be blogging about how we can't get him off his pacifier!) as he LOVES it and it really helps to calm him down. However, the past 2 times we've given it to him he's had a difficult time nursing and I've had to give him a bottle. So, I feel like nursing is finally "well established" and we gave him his paci this morning--and he's nursed beautifully 2 times since, so I think the paci might be a winner!

We're all doing great, I'm loving being at home and we're still enamored by our little guy. We're having a ton of fun and thank the Lord daily for baby Carter.

Welcome Carter!

Our precious baby boy is one week old today. He arrived on Friday 12/3 at 2:31 pm. 8 lbs, 8 ounces and 21 inches long. Here are some pics to chronicle our first week at home. I will do the labor story in a different post, but here are some pictures and comments to chronicle this first week.
Right before we left for the hospital. Last belly shot :). I did put on makeup, not knowing little man would not be arriving for another 17 hours!

In labor and delivery! This is BETWEEN contractions, pre-epidural.

Caleb's bed for the evening...

First glimpses of our son! I love Caleb's face in this picture.

Such a sweetie! He was probably 2 minutes old here, so alert!

Proud Daddy!

We moved to our room in post partum. Caleb and Carter enjoying some skin to skin. He's giving his Daddy a big bear hug. Love it!

Hearing screen--check. Passed!

Mimi holding Carter for the first time.

Nana and Papa with their son and grandson.
*I did not get any pics with Grandpa and GrandmaJo! How did that happen?! They visited multiple times and were at our house when we came home from the hospital....send me pics when you get a chance Dad!

Sweet Bible study girls came to visit.

Our "Celebration Meal" of spinach salad, ribeye steak, asparagus, potatoes, perrier water, starbucks coffee (decaf for mommy!) and tuxedo cake. Shout out to Medical City! Also, thanks Grandpa and GrandmaJo for watching Carter so we could enjoy this romantic meal in our hospital room :)

All ready for the car ride home! His first time to see the sun!

Uncle Stephen and Aunt Diana hanging out with the little guy and letting us unpack from the hospital.

LOVE this. Our little froggy. Lots and lots of snuggling going on around here this week and we're loving EVERY minute of it.

We took our first "outing" to Target on Tuesday while Mimi kept Carter. I had to pick up some baby stuff--after we went through the baby aisle, Caleb wanted to go down the toy aisle and find things that Carter needs in his future. He  cannot wait for the days of swords and nerf guns. I didn't realize how much I would miss him--we were gone less than 2 hours and it was really tough to be away from him. I hear this is normal, I'm sure it will get better.

Ham sandwiches, oh how I missed you! I restrained from deli meat during pregnancy, so I was excited to start eating something other than pb&j sandwiches!
I'm still working on the video skills, but here's a little video of Carter and his first hiccups.

Loving...
-his smell. so so sweet
-his cute little sneezes
-that scrunchy face he makes when he's about to cry
-the way he pulls his legs up so tight when you try to change his diaper
-the way he cuddles and it never gets old
-his startle reflex when a door closes or a toilet flushes. so cute.
-laughing so hard my stomach hurts (I think I strained a muscle during labor) at Caleb's reaction when Carter spits up or poops during diaper changes with Daddy
-the way he just holds your finger (I know it's a reflex, but still...)
-his sweet stretching, kicking, and arm movements as he grunts and wakes up from naps
-his sweet hair--and it smells so baby-ish.
-watching Caleb interact with him, and just watch him, and try to teach him how to do push-ups and go on "rides" on the blanket
-lots and lots of snuggling with Mommy and Daddy
-reading to him
-praying over him
-family nap times
-family walks (love the Bob!)
-friends bringing us meals
-all the calls, texts, and messages and the excitement of our family and friends!
-fire in the fireplace, Christmas music on, and Caleb and I just staring at him--couldn't imagine we could love him this much.

Don't get me wrong, he definitely has his moments of inconsolable crying and times at night where we both just WISH he would go back to sleep, but I wouldn't trade this first week for anything. His first night at home was really really rough, but it's funny how now I hardly remember it. He's now a much more "chill" child and will really just hang out unless he's a) hungry b) getting a bath or c) getting a diaper/clothes change--then we get the high-pitched, "Mommy and Daddy, come help me NOW!" screaming cry.

We are loving parenthood so far, and I'm already that Mom that says "I can't believe he's already a week old! I'm not ready for him to grow up!" :)
