Would you judge me...
...if I put Carter in a helmet and knee/elbow pads on a regular basis? This is a short, photo-free post (but don't worry, I am chronicling all the "firsts" on the camera and pics to come..) but man, this past week Carter has taken his activity to a whole new level. Let's just say Friday I was monitoring his pupil sizes and closely watching for signs of concussion after a major head bang (out of temper...but that's a whole other story) with subsequent nose bleed. On Saturday as I was on a college reunion roadtrip Caleb texted me a pic with only text "fyi" and pic of Carter with blood on his nose/mouth/face. Yesterday he was playing at the park, fell on his face (better than head I guess?) and today is sporting a "shiner" (Caleb's turn) on his left cheek. I'm now composing an email to his teachers for fair warning of our bruised, bloody boy so hopefully they will not report me to CPS. I'm sure this is only the beginning...Lord, protect this baby as I have a feeling we have a long road ahead!

Good Friday
God has been teaching me a lot about his desire for me to need Him. Not just in the tough times where I realize I can't do this on my own, but in the daily grind of life to look to Him. To seek Him. To care about what He thinks more than what other people think. To trust that He has things prepared for me to do in this short time I live on this earth--and seek those out.
Hebrews chapter 10 talks about Christ's sacrifice once and for all:
Talking about the sacrifices made under law..
v 3 "But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, when Christ came into the world he said "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire but a body you prepared for me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. Then I said 'Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll--I have come to do your will O God'"
And that, my friends, is why I celebrate Good Friday. Jesus died once and for all because we NEEDED him to. Only by his blood am I forgiven. The perfect lamb, perfect sacrifice. His blood was shed so that I may live.
Today is only good because Sunday is coming, when we remember that he didn't stay dead. He rose. He's alive and sitting next to the Father. Oh, how he loves us. That he would die so that I may live. And although I am still a sinner, I can approach the throne of grace with confidence because of the blood of Christ. I don't have to have a high priest go before me and sacrifice a bull or a goat as a sin offering. Jesus, the ultimate high priest, paid it all on the cross so that I can go before the throne and seek the Lord. Worship Him. Seek his will in this daily grind of life. Thank you, Jesus.

Dad's Birthday, Arboretum, Half Marathon
So I try to take pics from my actual camera when we have a "photo worthy" event. Problem is, I upload these pics about once every 3 months. So, here's a taste of the "camera worthy" pics the past few months...

16 months!
Here's what's going on at 16 months:
22 lbs at dr's office
size 4 diapers
9-12 mos pants, 12-18 tops
EAT:
I don't see how this child eats so much and stays so skinny. Veggies are still hit or miss, crackers and bananas are still all time faves. I love that school lunches are now much easier to pack--pb&j, slice of ham/cheese, strawberries, fruit/veggie pouch, and he's on his way! He's also doing great eating out at restaurants as long as there are plenty of people to entertain him.
DEVELOPMENT:
YAY that language is the big winner in the development category! Woo hoo! Receptively, he pretty much knows all of his toys ( I can say go get your car, fan, ball, book, etc) and will follow functional 1 step commands without cues. He's great about routines so before we leave I'll tell him "go get your blankey" or "go turn off the lights" or "go to Mommy's car" and he'll do it. He LOVES going so of course all these things mean we're about to leave.
I need expressive language to have it's own paragraph because although /dada/ is still anything he can't say, he is saying:
mama (melts my heart)
cracker /kae.kuh/ (high pitched rising intonation always...LOVE)
night night /nai.nai/
uh oh
all done /a.duh/
banana /nae.nuh/
.....WOO HOO!!! Makes this SLP so proud :)
Nothing new in gross motor/fine motor categories---just busy.as.always! We went to playgroup this morning and there was an 18 month old, 15 month old, and 14 month old--and Carter was by far the busiest of the bunch!
PLAY:
New this month is "organizing" the pantry--ie: going in and finding syrup, vegetable oil, waffle mix, bread, etc and bringing to me. However, his absolute favorite thing to get out of the pantry is crystal light. Especially the little pouches. LOVES it. So although most of the time I make sure the pantry door is closed, sometimes I will indulge (or forget) and he has a ball.
He also now loves to watch me make coffee. Caleb especially likes this because the coffee is now set every night for the next morning. Carter will point to the coffee pot multiple times a day requesting to make coffee, so this has become part of the 5:30 pm what-are-we-going-to-do-until-Daddy-gets-home routine.
Daddy also bought Carter a new (to us! Thanks Cragslist!) slide/fort for outside, so much of our day is spent outside sliding, pushing the wagon, and playing ball. He's really loving books and will go get a book, give it to you, and sit down your lap with the full expectation you will read to him! He doesn't have quite the attention span to read the story, but loves for you to point and label the pictures.
He's also started doing "praying hands" for prayers before meals and bed--so sweet :).
HEALTH:
Boo to say this has been a big month (or week) for health issues. First ear infection down (on right) so finishing up first round of antibiotics. Not sure if it's all the changing weather but 2 weeks ago Carter had an awful cough that kept him home and ended up with lots 'o breathing tx's. Then, last Thursday I picked him up from school and he had 102 fever and was just felt miserable--lethargic (3 naps!), laying on me, very irritable. He got tachypneic and I couldn't control the fever with tylenol so I took him in Friday afternoon and after lots of discussion between 2 doctors, he was diagnosed with likely a respiratory virus and ear infection. However, this virus was really affecting his breathing, so we did another round of steroids 3/30-4/3. BOO. Poor kid at one point was on 8 medications with breathing tx's q 4 (even at night) but we're now down to 2-3 breathing tx's/day, antibiotics, probiotic for gut protection, and regular advair puffs and nasonex. He was also prescribed Patenase by the pulmonologist to use when he has a nasal drip. Whew. Again, this is all for my records--Carter is really happy and only slowed down for about 2 days :).
I switched my work schedule this month so I'm working Tues/Thurs while he's in MDO. I'm loving the extra day at home!
Dear Carter Boy,
I have a feeling you are going to be very active just like your Daddy. From the moment Daddy gets you out of bed you're just pointing, jabbering, and telling us all about what you're doing and where you want to go. You are very busy but sometimes you realize you need a little rest--so you'll stick your 2 left fingers in your mouth and go searching for your blankey. Sometimes you'll "rest" for a minute or two and sometimes it's all of 2 seconds before you drop your blankey and you're back on the go. People always comment about your pretty eyes and bright smile. You rarely know a stranger and will wave and blow kisses to anyone that passes by--whether they're interacting with you or not! I can't express how much I love watching your little personality develop, I'm so lucky to be your Mommy!
Pics to come.....
